The Grand Astoria Venue is a historic venue. This Edwardian-style theatre was founded in 1906 as the Hippodrome Theatre. The venue has played host to iconic figures like Florrie Ford. Soon they began to screen movies here. As its popularity increased, Denman Gaumont acquired the place in 1928. He refurbished it in the art deco style. The theatre became a lavish space, showcasing the latest releases. In 1959, this theatre became the iconic Astoria Ballroom. It remained this way until 1991 when it became The Venue nightclub. With an island bar, multiple levels and an 800 person capacity, the club formed a key part of the town’s burgeoning nightlife. The Venue then turned into the Chicago Rock Café that many may know the building for. A Lava and Ignite club also opened upstairs in 2005, enjoying a number of years as a popular stop on the Middlesbrough club circuit. At present it is known as The Grand Astoria Venue, and we are proud to build on this history.
